The original Terry Hearn rods from ESP have become cult classics and still return good money on the second-hand market.
These new rods have been extensively tested and refined to Terry’s exacting standards and take these highly regarded rods to the next level. The blanks utilise the latest high modulus carbon cloths reinforced with a tough, durable woven overwrap. There are two versions available; the Terry Hearn Classic 12ft 9in. 3¼lb (40mm) and Terry Hearn Distance 12ft 9in. 3½lb (50mm).
The Classic is the purist model and the rod Terry uses for most of his fishing. The 12ft 9in. length is preferred by Terry as the extra length improves casting distance and accuracy on a wide range of leads to distances of over 100 metres. The Classic has a perfect forward action and superb fish playing response, providing tactile feedback into the hand and arm. The single leg SiC guides have been selected to reduce weight, improve action and balance, and feature ceramics to Terry’s request. They are perfectly positioned tapering from a 40mm butt guide to a 12mm tip ring.
The Distance version encompasses the iconic length and action of the benchmark 3¼lb 40mm model, but with extra reserves of power, particularly in the butt section, to provide a faster, more steely blank. This additional power along with the 50mm to 16mm ringing make for a serious casting tool and distances of over 150m can be achieved in the right hands. The rod will handle a wide range of leads, and big PVA bags can be fished with confidence. In spite of its power, this rod retains excellent fish playing properties and enough shock absorption in the tip to prevent hook pulls.
Both rods feature slim, full length EVA handles with a flared collar above a Fuji DPS reel seat, plus a machined stainless butt cap and moulded ESP line clip. These very attractive rods retail at £239 and £259 respectively. There is even a Terry Hearn Landing Net available to complement the rods.
